Paving the way to faster, more accessible CAR-T cell therapies

EASYGEN is a collaborative European public-private research project aiming to optimise CAR-T manufacturing hospital workflows, supporting more scalable access to advanced cell therapies and a sustainable healthcare workforce.

The challenge

Today's CAR-T therapies have a median vein-to-vein time of 3 to 6 weeks. Dependence on specialized, central manufacturing facilities, laborious and cost-intensive workflows, and a complex logistics can limit timely access to these transformative therapies.

Only ~18%

of eligible diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) patients across five major European countries receive CAR-T therapy.
Access varies considerably between countries, highlighting that availability of an effective therapy does not automatically translate into patient access.

About ~30%

of the total cost of care has been attributed to logistics and bridging therapy in published analyses. Bringing manufacturing closer to patients could reduce parts of this burden.

Cross-border complexity

Cell therapies often travel across borders twice, under tight customs and shipping constraints. For an autologous therapy, this means coordinating the movement of both patient cells and the final treatment across a tightly controlled chain of identity and custody.

Resource-intensive

Manufacturing still depends on specialised personnel, infrastructure and multiple high-touch process steps, which can contribute to delays and constrain capacity.

High treatment costs

With overall CAR-T treatment costs potentially exceeding €500,000 per patient, health systems face significant challenges in scaling access.For patients with rapidly progressing disease, time matters: delays during the treatment pathway may mean that some patients deteriorate before they can receive CAR-T therapy.

Our vision

A future where CAR-T therapies can be manufactured directly in hospitals, using automated, non-viral manufacturing approaches — bringing production closer to patients and helping make advanced cell therapies more accessible and scalable.

Our mission

EASYGEN's (EASY Workflow Integration for GENe Therapy) mission is to help broaden access to advanced cell therapies through the development and evaluation of a scalable, automated, non-viral, point-of-care manufacturing platform that brings CAR-T production closer to the patient.

But technology alone is not enough. EASYGEN brings together manufacturing, quality control, digital integration, hospital workflows, health economics, regulatory considerations and patient perspectives to explore how decentralised CAR-T manufacturing could work in real healthcare environments.
